Message to the International Human Rights Education Conference

I welcome the opportunity to offer my support for the Third International Conference on Human Rights Education "Promoting Change in Times of Transition and Crisis" held at Jagiellonian University, Cracow.

The 2010 Sydney conference  initiated this important dialogue on the contribution made by the human rights education to the furthering of democracy, the rule of law, as well as to the promotion of intercultural dialogue, social harmony and justice. The 2011 Durban conference focused on the role of human rights education in post-apartheid society and its contribution to development.

Poland and its peaceful transfer from a communist to a well functioning democratic society has been an inspiration for the world and constitute a good practice example for countries currently seeking to achieve a democratic transformation.

This conference will provide a crucial forum of ideas for academia and civil society and will build greater understanding of human rights both in Poland and world-wide.

I commend the Jagiellonian University and its partners and sponsors for making this conference possible.
